What is a Mehndi?

A Mehndi party is a pre-wedding event for the bride and her closest female friends and family members. The main focus of the event is the application of the bridal mehndi, or henna design, to her hands and feet, but the bride’s guests are encouraged to have mehndi, or henna, applied to their hands as well. Mehndi is an herbal paste associated with positive spirits and good luck. Aunties say, the deeper the color of the bride's mehndi, the stronger the love between the couple.

What kind of clothing is appropriate for the Mehndi?

Women are encouraged to wear saris, Anarkali, or salwar kameez with duppata. For additional information on what these are and how to wear them, please refer to this guide. If you plan to have henna done at the party, you may wish to wear short or ¾ length sleeves so that they don’t interfere with the application on your hands.

What kind of clothing is appropriate for the Hindu Wedding Ceremony?

Women are encouraged to wear more decorative saris and lehenga choli, but traditional Western cocktail-style attire and longer dresses are also welcome. Additional details below:

Keep in mind when you’re choosing an outfit to wear to the ceremony that you’ll be sitting for at least an hour if not two. Although traditional wedding attire varies in South India, silk kanchipuram sarees (long elaborate silk drape wrapped around the body) and lehenga vonis (3-piece outfit composed of the lehenga (skirt), choli (blouse), and a voni (a cloth about 6-8 feet long)) are most common for women. Heavier or more decorative fabrics (embroidery, beading, silks, etc.) are generally considered more formal than simpler cotton or more lightweight styles. Today, styles have mixed, so you may see some wedding guests choosing to wear a North Indian style lehenga or shervani to a South Indian wedding. Unlike a Western wedding where people avoid dressing in the same color as the bride, Indian brides can wear any color, so there are no particular colors that guests should avoid when choosing what to wear.

Men are encouraged to wear veshtis (a cotton or silk cloth draped around the waist and legs) with a silk shirt, Kurta Pajama, or Sherwani/Achkan. For additional information on what these are and how to wear them, please reference one of these guides shared below. Western style suits are also welcome.

Where can I buy Indian clothes?

Depending on where you live, there may be a local Indian store where you can peruse options and see what feels best for you. That said, there are also lots of resources for online shopping!

Some favorites for Women include: Kalki Fashion, Anita Dongre, Nalli, Lukh (rental service), Pernia’s Pop-Up, Aashni & Co. and even Etsy!

Some favorites for Men include: Kalki Fashion, Anita Dongre, Pernia’s Pop-Up, and Aashni & Co..

Please be mindful of shipping and import times when purchasing clothing directly from India. If you are purchasing a Saree please also remember you will need a blouse (choli) and skirt (also called a petticoat) to wear underneath. If you are purchasing a lehenga please remember you will also need a choli (blouse) as well, some come with coordinating cholis and some do not. The good thing about cholis and petticoats is that you can mix and match them with multiple sarees (dependent on the color)!

How do I wear a Saree?

Saris (or "Sarees") are beautiful and traditional South Indian garments (and Annie’s personal favorite to wear). For beginners, they can also be really difficult to wrap! Some lovely guests have volunteered to assist those that may need help wrapping their sarees, but if you’d like to give it a go yourself, please find a step-by-step guide here!

What kind of clothing is appropriate for the Western Wedding Ceremony and Reception?

The dress code is Creative Black Tie - this link has additional information you may find helpful. For women this means longer, formal dresses or looks. Please refrain from wearing white dresses, as this color is traditionally reserved for the bride. Color is encouraged, so please avoid wearing black if you can. Black suits and tuxedos are welcome, please put your own stamp on it as you see fit. Formal Indian clothing is also welcome.

When is the RSVP deadline?

Please RSVP no later than February 1, 2022 so that we can ensure accommodations for all. You can RSVP directly on the website here.

My invitation doesn’t list a +1 but I really want to bring someone. What do I do?

Unfortunately both of our venues have strict capacity limits. Please refrain from bringing any extra guests unless they are named on the invitation or it is clearly marked "+1 guest".

Are children invited to the weddings?

Yes, if so, your child’s name(s) will be listed on the invitation for attendance. Please keep in mind that our Hindu wedding ceremony will be approximately 1.5-2 hours long and not performed in English, if you think this may be uncomfortable for your child(ren) to sit through.

Can I take pictures during the ceremonies?

We have hired an amazing photographer to capture both days, and kindly ask that you keep your photo silent and unseen during both ceremonies. We will have signs and reminders that both ceremonies are “unplugged” as well. We know you want to get good pictures, so we will be sure to upload all the photos taken by our photographer to the wedding website to share when they become available.

What are you doing to ensure Covid safety?

We want you all to feel comfortable and safe so we are requesting that everyone who is able to receive a vaccine be vaccinated at least (2) weeks prior to the wedding date. If you are not able to receive a vaccine where you live, we will request that you provide us with a negative PCR result test prior to entry, taken a maximum of 72 hours before the event. Unless state or local laws change prior to the weddings, masks will not be necessary. All of our vendors are required to follow state and federal health guidelines also. If you need help finding a place to take a PCR test or have further questions regarding Covid safety, please contact us directly at us@anniewedsadi.com.
